Tips + Tricks for Bold Lips

Fall and winter scream bold lips! But they aren’t the easiest lip colors to work with, especially if you have fair skin like I do. Don’t worry! I’ve rounded up my best tips + tricks and my favorites for this season.

How to Wear Bold Lips

Find shades that match your skin tone – Choose a shade with an undertone that is complementary to your skin tone.  I prefer cool-toned lipsticks with my neutral skin tone. A lip color that goes with your specific skin tone will look better! With reds, the cooler the tone (aka blue base) the whiter your teeth will look.

Use a Liner – Whether you simply line your lips or fill them in before you apply lip color, liner is helpful! A liner helps keep the color in place and last longer. If you’ve noticed lipstick start to feather around your lip line after wearing it awhile – a liner will help keep it in place!

Glosses and cream formulas seem to work better for me. They apply easier, and they don’t get too dry and settle into the lines of my lips, like a matte liquid lipstick.

Keep the rest of your makeup colors simple to keep the focus on the lip. I suggest a neutral or light-colored eye look with a bold lip. You can still define your eyes with mascara and liner so they aren’t lost, but too many bold colors or products can be too much.

Use a bold lip to dress up a look or hairstyle. I love how a dark lip can take a ponytail from blah to glam!
